At the SX TALK STAGE on October 2, 2024, Asst. Prof. Dr. Marc Stefan Felix from the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Mahidol University, delivered a compelling talk under the theme “Sustaining Communities: Aging, Our Elders, Health & Society.” In his presentation, Dr. Felix shared deep insights into the role of sustainability in the context of aging populations, highlighting the urgent need for inclusive and holistic care for the elderly in today’s societies.

A Broader Perspective on Sustainability
Dr. Felix emphasized that sustainability is often associated with environmental and economic concerns. However, he argued that true sustainability must encompass the social dimension, particularly the well-being of older adults—a rapidly growing demographic in many countries, including Thailand. In discussions around sustainability, it is essential to incorporate frameworks that ensure older adults receive quality care as they navigate the complexities of aging.
Demographic Shifts and Their Impact
Thailand currently has over 17 million people aged 60 and over, and this number is expected to rise significantly due to advancements in healthcare and increased life expectancy. This demographic shift brings forth a range of challenges—from increased healthcare demands to financial burdens and the need for dignified care. Dr. Felix stressed the importance of planning and implementing systems that allow older individuals to age with dignity and quality of life.
Healthcare Tailored for the Elderly
One of the core issues raised was the importance of accessible and age-appropriate healthcare services. Dr. Felix pointed out that the elderly often face unique health challenges, such as arthritis, osteoporosis, and mental health conditions like depression and dementia. He called for the development of robust healthcare infrastructures that not only treat these conditions but also promote overall well-being among the elderly population.
Supportive Living Environments
Beyond healthcare, Dr. Felix underlined the need for age-friendly housing. This includes safe, comfortable, and adaptable living environments—homes equipped with assistive devices and modified designs that accommodate the changing needs of elderly individuals. Features such as non-slip bathrooms, grab bars, accessible layouts, and recreational areas are essential to support independent living.
Financial Security for the Aging Population
Addressing the financial dimension, Dr. Felix emphasized the importance of financial literacy and support systems for older adults. He advocated for proactive financial planning that empowers seniors to manage their living expenses effectively, rather than relying solely on pensions or state assistance. Educational initiatives and advisory services can play a crucial role in fostering financial independence in older age.
The Power of Social Connectivity
Social support emerged as another critical factor. Dr. Felix noted that strong social networks significantly enhance the mental and emotional health of the elderly. Creating opportunities for social interaction—through community programs, interest groups, or neighborhood gatherings—can reduce isolation and foster a sense of belonging and contribution among older adults.

Building a Supportive Society Together
In conclusion, Dr. Felix underscored that sustainable elder care requires a unified, cross-sectoral approach involving government agencies, private enterprises, civil society, and local communities. He highlighted the importance of education and training not only for professionals but also for family members and neighbors, empowering them to care for the elderly with empathy and competence.
His message was clear: the challenges posed by an aging society are urgent and require immediate and collaborative action. Holistic preparation—from healthcare and housing to financial planning and social inclusion—is not merely a governmental responsibility. It is a shared societal duty.
By investing in these areas today, we are not only securing the future well-being of our elders but also shaping a more inclusive and resilient society for all. Dr. Felix’s insights serve as a timely reminder that sustainability begins with how we care for those who came before us.
