As the planet continues to feel the pressing effects of climate change, the global fashion industry is undergoing a significant transformation. Sustainable fashion — an emerging trend that emphasizes environmental consciousness and responsible production — is becoming a key driver of positive change for both the present and future of our world.
At Sustainability Expo 2024, ASEAN’s largest sustainability event under the theme “Good Balance, Better World: Sufficiency for Sustainability,” one of the highlights was the Talk Stage session titled “Cultural Heritage for Global Sustainable Fashion.” This session brought together university students from the Creative Young Designers Season 4 program and community representatives, offering them a platform to share how local wisdom and heritage can be reimagined through fashion to promote sustainability.

Participants from various universities showcased their ideas and the creative process behind their sustainable fashion collections — all inspired by the knowledge, artistry, and unique cultural identity of the communities they had collaborated with during field visits. The designs reflect a thoughtful synthesis of tradition and innovation.

Some of the highlighted communities included:
-
Ban Chiang Indigo Weaving Network, Nong Han District, Udon Thani
-

These collaborations were brought to life on stage through a fashion show featuring over 100 participants from the Creative Young Designers Season 4 cohort. The stunning collections displayed not only the beauty of regional craftsmanship but also their economic and cultural value — supporting community livelihoods and keeping traditional skills alive in the modern era.

The Creative Young Designers Season 4 initiative is part of a broader partnership with the “Smiling Community” Project and leading academic institutions, aimed at driving social value through creativity. The program reflects a commitment to inclusive growth — where innovation is deeply rooted in cultural preservation and shared prosperity. Its goal is to build strong, resilient grassroots economies through sustainable, self-reliant development.
