Who would have thought that colorful stretch yarns could be woven into beautiful keychains—not only adding vibrancy to life but also symbolizing respectful coexistence in diversity?
The workshop “Rainbow String Weaving” at the SX IDEA LAB during Sustainability Expo 2025 (SX2025) on September 27, 2025, from 5:00–6:00 PM at Queen Sirikit National Convention Center, was one of the most heartwarming and inspiring sessions. The atmosphere was filled with joy as children, parents, and attendees of all ages came together to enjoy this creative hands-on activity.

The session was led by Petchlapa Cheewamongkol, an artist from the Language of the Soul project of The Rainbow Room Foundation, who believes in the healing power of art to build focus and serve as a bridge between people. The highlight of the workshop was the care and attention given by the artist and her team, who guided participants step by step, encouraged them, and helped solve small challenges along the way—so that everyone, even complete beginners, could complete their very own keychain.

Materials provided: Each participant received just two items—colorful stretch yarn (already tied to the keychain ring) and a special round wooden or foam weaving board.
Weaving steps were simple to follow:
Thread the colorful stretch yarn into the holes prepared on the board.
Focus on the four green marks, with one at the top (like “north” on a compass) to keep track easily.
Follow the simple formula: “Top to bottom – Bottom to top – Right over left – Left over right.”
Once the desired length is reached, tie a knot at the end—and it’s complete!
Even with such basic steps, each participant’s choice of colors and weaving rhythm made their keychains unique, reflecting their personal creativity and intention. But what made the workshop truly special was not just the keepsake itself—it was the reminder that art can shift perspectives, help us appreciate our surroundings in new ways, and open our hearts to human differences.

As a caregiver of Petchlapa Cheewamongkol shared: “We believe sustainability happens when society gives everyone the opportunity—regardless of differences or limitations—to show their true potential. Just like our young artist here, who, despite having Down syndrome, could teach everyone how to weave a keychain and succeed. If society gives space, respect, and recognition to each individual, everyone can be both a giver and a learner. This is what sustainable and happy coexistence looks like.”

Though the “Rainbow String Weaving” workshop was a short, hands-on session, its true takeaway extended far beyond the stretch-yarn keychains. It was a lasting lesson: building a sustainable world can start with small acts—like creating new value from simple materials or recognizing the potential within diverse individuals. Just as the colorful yarns were woven together into a single design, people too can be connected by threads of hope, respect, and shared responsibility for the future.
