From Concept to Collaboration: The Business Sector Expands Partnerships to Drive Sustainability
View all SX News & Movement

From its origins six years ago in raising sustainability awareness among the general public and leading corporations, the SUSTAINABILITY EXPO 2025 (SX2025) has now evolved to a new level of business-to-business collaboration. This year, it is anticipated that several public and private organizations, which began partnership negotiations at last year's event, will finalize agreements and embark on concrete collaborations.

Beyond the public exhibitions and activities, the business-to-business forums—a cornerstone of SX2025—serve as a critical mechanism for driving sustainability across multiple dimensions, translating high-level policy into tangible business activities.

Australia, a nation renowned for its agricultural sector and a regional leader in sustainability initiatives, serves as a compelling example of this collaboration and has consistently played a significant role in the SX business forums.

In 2024, the Australian Trade and Investment Commission (Austrade) led a delegation of top Australian companies and institutions to present information and meet with Thai organizations. The mission was to explore opportunities for collaboration in all facets of sustainability, focusing on agricultural technology, smart cities, and Green Skills—the abilities that enable the modern workforce to live and work in ways that minimize their impact on the environment.

Amelia Walsh, Senior Trade and Investment Commissioner and Minister-Counsellor (Commercial) at Austrade, explained, "Following our participation last year, Australia has worked continuously with various Thai public and private sector entities, such as the Federation of Thai Industries, the Thai Chamber of Commerce, and private companies—both those already operating in Thailand and those seeking new partnership opportunities."

Australian companies have shown significant interest in doing business or partnering with Thai organizations, particularly in the fields of agricultural technology. This includes Biochar, a process that converts agricultural waste into fertilizer or soil enhancers as an alternative to burning; and livestock monitoring devices, such as those for swine, to track animal health.

In a key academic partnership, Murdoch University has collaborated with Naresuan University to launch a joint research laboratory on the topic of “Waste Utilisation and the Circular Economy.” The lab aims to promote joint research and training to transform waste products like rice straw, food scraps, and fruit waste into biopolymers and bioplastics. Furthermore, several other companies that have been in partnership talks are now preparing to sign formal cooperation agreements to bring their sustainability projects to fruition.

In addition to fostering international collaboration, the business forums on the 2nd floor of SX2025 host a multitude of seminars and networking events to promote learning among organizations. These include:

  • Meetings and experience-sharing sessions for community enterprises.

  • Forums for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) focused on sustainability.

  • Discussions on the role of education in shaping the future of ASEAN industries.

  • A seminar on water resource security.

  • A presentation on China's smart city technology.

  • A meeting of Chief Sustainability Officers from leading corporations in Thailand and the region.

Although these events are not open to the public, they are powerful and influential platforms that drive the sustainability agenda. They are highly valued by the private and business sectors and result in real-world action. The Sustainability Expo is thus a comprehensive platform for everyone in society to create a genuine ripple effect.
