When it comes to waste types, wet waste is one of the most troublesome for many households. If not handled properly, it can lead to unpleasant odors and even the spread of germs. At the SX IDEA LAB zone during the Sustainability Expo 2024 (SX2024) held at Queen Sirikit National Convention Center on October 3, 2024, Ms. Pitchakorn Rueksakulruang, Policy and Planning Analyst from the Department of Local Administration (DLA), led a hands-on workshop under the theme “Wet Waste Bins to Reduce Global Warming”, offering simple yet effective tips to help households deal with organic waste at the source.
“The ‘Wet Waste Bin to Reduce Global Warming’ initiative is a policy from the Ministry of Interior, implemented by the Department of Local Administration, aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The goal is to encourage every household to set up a wet waste bin to actively contribute to climate action,” said Ms. Pitchakorn Rueksakulruang during her presentation.

What Is a Wet Waste Bin?
A wet waste bin is a container designed specifically for organic waste — such as food scraps — to help reduce the release of methane and carbon dioxide from landfill sites, two major contributors to the greenhouse effect.
How to Make a Wet Waste Bin at Home
This DIY approach is practical, cost-effective, and easy for everyone to follow:
-
Use any spare container with a lid and cut out the bottom.
-
Dig a hole deep enough so that two-thirds of the container is buried, leaving about 30 cm of space between the bottom of the bin and the bottom of the hole.
-
Add food scraps into the bin and close the lid.
-
Stir the contents each time you add new waste to aerate the mixture.
-
When the waste reaches ground level, remove the bin, cover the area with soil, and move the bin to a new spot.

Learning Through Play: Sorting Waste the Right Way
Participants also engaged in interactive activities that deepened their understanding of the importance of waste separation. Through the game “Which Bin?”, they learned how to properly sort wet waste from recyclables using everyday items like fermented rice noodles (khanom jeen) and plastic water bottles, including how to disassemble packaging for optimal recycling.
The session wrapped up with a fun and educational Kahoot quiz, where attendees competed for prizes. Each participant also received a demo kit to set up their own wet waste bin at home — making the workshop both enjoyable and practical.
