Green City Smart City: Promoting Health for a Sustainable Urban Future

Dr. Opas Karnkawinpong, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Public Health, stated that the Ministry prioritizes improving urban population health through holistic wellness. Beyond physical health care aimed at longevity and disease prevention, mental health promotion, stress reduction, and cultivating discernment in receiving information are emphasized as crucial for modern urban living.

To achieve these goals, the Ministry implements policies to encourage healthy behaviors, such as promoting balanced nutrition, reducing consumption of sweet, fatty, and salty foods, and collaborating with various sectors to develop tasty, affordable, and accessible healthy food options. Physical activity is promoted by increasing access to exercise facilities and providing incentives like tax reductions to encourage regular exercise.

Furthermore, the Ministry collaborates with relevant agencies to improve environmental quality by reducing air, water, and noise pollution—major risk factors for chronic diseases. Public spaces such as parks, walking paths, and bicycle lanes are developed to encourage outdoor activities and leisure.

The Ministry also encourages both public and private organizations to foster healthy work environments, including exercise facilities and health programs, with possible tax incentives for those prioritizing employee health.

Recognizing the importance of cooperation with entities like Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, the private sector, and civil society, the Ministry aims to maximize health promotion effectiveness, leading to comprehensive well-being aligned with Bangkok’s Green City Smart City goals.

Real Estate Development: Enhancing Livability and Quality of Life

Panote Sirivadhanabhakdi, CEO of Frasers Property Limited, shared deep insights into Bangkok’s real estate development, stressing the importance of integrating quality of life improvements aligned with Bangkok’s Green City Smart City policy.

A key focus is Mixed-Use Development, combining residential, office, retail, hotel, and public spaces in one project. This approach maximizes land use efficiency, reduces management costs, diversifies risks, and creates a comprehensive living environment that enhances urban dynamism and livability.

Design should be people-centered, creating spaces and amenities that meet residents’ needs, facilitate daily life, and encourage social interaction, thereby building strong communities. Increasing accessible green spaces, especially public parks, is vital for physical and mental health.

Connecting developments with public transportation, such as mass transit systems, helps reduce private vehicle dependence, traffic congestion, and air pollution. Promoting arts and culture, including allocating space for art exhibitions, enriches the urban atmosphere.

One Bangkok, a large-scale central city project, exemplifies these principles by integrating offices, hotels, residences, retail, green spaces, public transport links, and cultural activities. It reflects the private sector’s commitment to enhancing residents’ quality of life and supporting Bangkok’s urban development direction.

Urban Lifestyle and Environmental Conservation: Not a Choice but a Necessity

Living in a metropolis surrounded by convenience, technology, and a fast-paced lifestyle can cause many to overlook environmental impact. Yet small daily behavioral changes can significantly help maintain nature’s balance.

Start by examining consumption habits, shifting from plastic-laden food delivery to home cooking, reducing waste, greenhouse gas emissions, and improving health, culinary skills, and expenses. Using local or natural ingredients further reduces transportation impact and supports local economies.

Reducing single-use plastics by carrying reusable cups, lunchboxes, and bags may initially feel inconvenient but eventually becomes second nature, much like carrying a phone or wallet.

Transportation choices matter—public transit such as trains and buses reduce traffic and emissions; cycling promotes health and environmental friendliness; walking is ideal for short distances, allowing appreciation of surroundings often missed in vehicles. Living in less dense suburban areas with cleaner air and shorter commutes can improve physical and mental health.

When shopping, plan to avoid unnecessary purchases, reduce online shopping (which involves packaging and shipping waste), support local producers, and choose natural, biodegradable, or organic products despite higher costs as worthwhile investments for personal and environmental well-being.

Above all, cultivating environmental consciousness begins with gradual personal behavior changes without pressure for instant results. Activities include waste sorting, reusing, tree planting, water and energy conservation, and adopting eco-friendly lifestyles—simple acts that collectively make our world better for us and future generations.

Sustainable Real Estate Development: Environmental Perspectives

From Panote Sirivadhanabhakdi, CEO of Frasers Property Limited:

The future of real estate development centers on environmental sustainability, responding to global environmental challenges. Key principles include:

  • Inspiration and Engagement: Fostering environmental awareness and sustainable development begins by inspiring participation, especially among youth, who are crucial to future societal progress. Initiatives like SX 2024 disseminate knowledge and raise awareness to build cooperation in environmental conservation.

  • Integrating Sustainability Across Sectors: Sustainable real estate development requires collaboration beyond property sectors, involving health, technology, and others. Technologies like AI should be leveraged to enhance quality of life and sustainability, creating balanced, long-term societies.

  • Community and Quality of Life Development: Projects must consider social and environmental dimensions alongside economic factors, aiming to build sustainable communities and lifestyles. Examples include “Battle Living” and “Battle Community” projects promoting sustainable living environments.

  • Efficient Resource Management: Efficient use of resources is vital. Real estate should adopt technologies for energy and water management, use environmentally friendly building materials, and design energy-saving buildings to reduce environmental impact and greenhouse gas emissions.

In summary, sustainable real estate development depends on cross-sector cooperation, awareness-raising, mindset cultivation, and technology adoption to balance development with natural resource conservation, leading to sustainable progress and enhanced quality of life for present and future generations.

This means integrated development across economic, social, and environmental dimensions, prioritizing citizens’ quality of life.

Sustainable urban development requires cooperation and participation from government, private sector, civil society, and citizens, starting with cultivating environmental consciousness, responsibility, and promoting behavior change such as reducing energy consumption, waste, choosing eco-friendly products, and sustainable transport.

Technology and innovation play critical roles in enhancing sustainable urban development, including energy, water, and waste management, smart transportation systems, and platforms that connect data and encourage public engagement.

Real estate development is also vital in creating sustainable cities, emphasizing environmentally friendly design and construction, efficient energy use, waste management, green spaces, and quality of life for residents and surrounding communities.

Building sustainable cities is a long-term mission that depends on collaboration and commitment, starting today to create a better future for the next generation.
